UV ink wash vs conventional ink wash: what is the difference?

UV ink cures by a different mechanism from conventional offset ink. A similar-looking residue therefore does not mean that the same wash will clean equally safely or efficiently.

Different binders need different solvency

Conventional inks dry mainly through absorption and oxidation, while UV systems cure under radiation. The cleaner must act on the relevant binder system.

Protect elastomers

EPDM and NBR have different solvent resistance. An unsuitable wash can swell, harden or alter a roller surface.

Prevent cross-contamination

During a system change, clean rollers, pans, doctor blades and tools to avoid affecting colour, cure and press stability.

Control operator exposure

Select ventilation, gloves and dosing from the SDS. Low odour does not automatically mean low risk.

Confirm with repeated trials

Evaluate time, consumption, residue and elastomer condition after several cycles, not only a single successful wash.
